"Slow Horses" Aren't Always Slow!!!

Apple has taken Mick Herron's tale
to staggering heights!
If you have AppleTV+ you are very fortunate. While their library is small compared to say Netflix or Amazon Prime, the shows they offer are top notch and extremely watchable. One of their highest rated shows is SLOW HORSES, a show about the derelicts of British Intelligences MI5. However, other hits include TED LASSO, SEVERENCE, PLURIBUS, SILO, FOUNDATION, SHRINKING, FOR ALL MANKIND, DARK MATTER and newly Emmy Awards winning WIDOW'S BAY. Each one of these is definitely worth exploring but there's some thing universal about SLOW HORSES.

Watching and binging on anyone of its six seasons, so far, are the questions it raises about any state run secret service whether it be the US, Britain, France, Russia or China.

For those not in the horse racing "know," slow horses are the last horses to cross the finish line in a typical horse race. Yes, those stragglers that make you wonder how they ever qualified in the first place. Well, the powers that be in the glittering MI5 HQ relegate those agents they consider "slow horses" into Slough House, a rundown building somewhere in the heart of London.Everything is rundown even it's director.

Led by Jackson Lamb, Gary Oldman's finest acting role, whose an old, scruffy agent whose leading a cast of misfits who seem to be always cleaning up the messes of their superiors. The show calls into question just how effective is say our FBI or internationally the CIA or MI5 or MI6 or Russia's FSB? In fact, watching the actions of all such agents, including our own ICE, many of these agents seem to be streets thugs given authority they should never have been given.

In meeting these people in TV shows or movies, even reading about them or seeing their actions on the nightly news you wonder, why were they ever hired? Yet, at the same time we must take the blame because we oftentimes made them. What does a Green Beret, Navy Seal or Army veteran do after leaving the service? They've been made into a killing machine not Mr. Rogers. The cartels are hiring and maybe? the FBI or some shady mercenary group.

Warnings sent to the FBI were ignored for months before 9/11. The CIA's direct and indirect actions in the assassination of the newly elected, progressive president of Iran in 1953 have ramifications we see daily on the nightly news and at the gas pump, 73 years later.

Just how good are they? No, I'm not naive, there ARE bad people out there. Hitler, Mao, Stalin, Franco, and many more. Take your pick, they were bad people. However, how are our interferences creating even more bad people? You don't think our current actions in the Middle East today won't affect youth who will be adults 10-20 years later? I think of the FBI's Hanson case where a high level FBI agent was finally discovered as a Russian spy after 25 years. He was in Washington, D.C., in the heart of the beast! Can you imagine?

Interestingly the slow horses seem to be constantly saving the butts of more elite agents. Besides creating crises and inner fighting with agents inside MI5, fighting and killing each other to keep past transgressions from seeing the light of day, hidden sins from the past still reappear and must finally be faced. It makes for heart pounding, stop breathing excitement from the comfort of your easy chair yet, in reflection it should give you pause. In our 250 years as a Republic, we have been in some kind of war for roughly 229 years. That raises a fascinating question: Has the United States ever truly been a nation at peace, or has military involvement become a permanent feature of American government and foreign policy? Have we followed the footsteps of Imperial Rome?

It is a fascinating show, yes, but if we watch closely it also asks the question, what have we done and what will the cost to us be in the future?
